Untitled #7

Untitled #7—with its faintly visible horizontal stripes—does not shout for attention, but rather draws you closer with a whisper. Although she began her career as a figurative artist, Agnes Martin’s discovery of the grid in 1961 altered her work’s focus and provided inspiration for the rest of her life. Here, she simplifies her characteristic rows and columns by painting only horizontal bands. While other artists embraced the rigor of grids, Martin held a singular belief in their potential to elicit emotion.
