Haystacks
Although titled Haystacks, the subtle effects of light and color are the true subject of this painting. Despite the small size of the painting, Martin Johnson Heade emphasized an expansive view by using a canvas that is more than twice as wide as it is high. The quiet setting, where land and water meet the open skies, evokes contemplation, meditation, and the passing of time.
