Domino Players

Gathered around a folding table set up outside, three men play a game of dominoes. Viewed from two slightly different angles, the stacked images provide a snapshot of the scene, depicted only moments apart. Focused on his neighborhood, Willie Birch often creates massive black-and-white works that showcase daily life in the Seventh Ward of New Orleans. Often basing his mixed media works on quick photographs taken while walking around in his community, the large scale and distinctive style feel simultaneously grand and casual, highlighting the extraordinary in the everyday.
