Photography by Edward C. Robison III

Untitled, 1989 (Bernstein 89-24)

Jutting out from the wall, Donald Judd’s stacked series of rectangles enter the viewer’s space. Judd achieved machined precision by hiring professional fabricators—the Bernstein brothers—to create perfectly identical 9-inch-tall boxes, which are then installed with nine inches between each rectangle. Positioned this way, the negative space becomes a critical part of the overall work. Judd claims otherwise unused gallery space—not by creating painted illusions, but through precision and placement.
