Leaf type: Leaves are oblong and 4-6 in. long and 2-3 in. wide. Color changes from a yellowish-green in the summer to an orangish-brown in the fall. Leaves have 8-13 pairs of lateral veins.

Bloom description: Monoecious (having male and female flowers on one plant), hanging, and yellow-green in color.

Garden uses: Chinquapin Oak is a medium-sized tree, growing 40-50 ft. tall with a greater spread of 50-60 ft. It is weakly rounder in youth, but matures to an open, rounded canopy.

Wildlife benefits: The acorns are browsed by deer, black bear, squirrels, wild turkey, and several species of ducks.
